Susan Shields is a Certified Pediatric Palliative Care APRN currently practicing at John’s Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University, Master’s degree from the University of Florida, and post-graduate certification from State University of New York, Stoney Brook. She has been working as a provider on the inpatient consult service for the past 6 years and recently received advanced certification. She is active in program development, quality improvement, and research. She is also responsible for education for nursing staff, residents, fellows, and faculty. Her career began in the NICU as a staff nurse, which led to her first advanced degree as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. After several years of practice, she subsequently earned an advanced practice specialty in Pediatrics. One of her proudest accomplishments was forming an independent company as president of Advanced Pediatric Partners. This practice was formed to develop a framework for quality pediatric care at the County Health Departments in Hillsborough County, Florida, and to staff them with consistent advanced practice providers in order to provide families with a true medical home for their children. She has extensive experience working with children with acute and chronic complex health care needs in both inpatient and outpatient settings and her passion is promoting quality of life for these children and their families.
